Is there a need for Brendan Shanahan? Surely there must be a way to regulate the suspension system? I think we all agree that after the first year of Shanahan we have all been jaded by the lack of consistency and yet again, transparency in the process. Why not take it out of human hands as much as possible? Make it a points system based 5 factors. Screw the stars getting favorable non suspensions, screw using players as examples, one rule for all.
A points grading system should take most of the guess/human factor out, well as much as this league would allow. The system has a base of carry over multipliers that will make any incident more and more costly on a repeat offender. There needs to be grading systems for each incident.
The grading system starts off with a tiered system of suspensions:
Each type of ‘illegal’ hit will come with a points rating based upon five factors, each will have a 3 tier rating that will fill up the points for the incident.
OV on Gonchar
498.75 points total: so a 10 game suspension
Torres on Hossa
840 points: 20 games
Neal on Couturier and Giroux
Neal on Giroux
525 points, 15 games
Neal on Couturier
560 points: 10 games
Nystrom on Letang
Total Points: 475, 10 games
From these examples you can see the punishment can can be quite severe, in the case of James Neal, the two incidents in the one game would warrant a 25 game suspension. Yes that is right, more than a quarter of the season. The whole idea of this system is to put the fear of god into the players to tidy up what they do. No more running guys, no irresponsible head shots.
The NHL needs to take a hard stand on the reckless behavior the players are showing, it is obvious they are not going to ‘respect’ each other, so if the league wants to have its top players showcasing the sport across North America, you need to have the top players on the ice, not in the hospital.
